"Spring Break 2017 in Cabo (long but comprehensive review)"
Husband, 9 y.o. son and I used our HGVC (Hilton Grand Vacations Club) points to reserve a 1 BR villa at this resort. Tip - We booked this location 9 mos. in advance and was able to get an Ocean Front (vs Ocean view) villa right in front of the private pool for owners. We stayed 5 nights/6 days March 25-30, 2017.
Let's start with our Saturday afternoon arrival in Mexico and the 1.5 hour cattle call through customs. It was unbearable and my son almost had a meltdown standing in the ridiculously long lines. Luckily we had downloaded movies on our cellphones so he watched a movie as we slowly creeped through the customs. I will post a picture of what it looked like. After customs we were hassled to attend timeshare presentations by two different people all under the guise that they were the rental car counter check-in. Totally false. Next time we know to keep going until you get outside and the rental car shuttle will be there. My husbands golf club bag was the visual indicator to them to push hard on us. We knew the resort would be making a similar presentation offer and decided to wait to hear theirs.
We rented a compact 4 door at Hertz as it was only $75 for the whole stay. When we got to the counter, they of course tried to insist we add liability insurance. We declined. It's risky but at $13/day, the insurance was more than the cost of the rental. This turned out to be a wise decision because speaking with other vacationers, they were paying $20-$40 on taxi's for every excursion.
Now we get to the resort. I was impressed by the security. There's a main gate where you are stopped and must identify yourself as a guest and they check their list for your name. There is also a second security guard further up the road who would stop taxi's and other vehicles again.
They have free valet for the car and the resort check-in was fast and easy. We opted to do the all-inclusive which was $70 (adult) / $40 (child) per day. This is an option for timeshare owners, Hotel guests are automatically part of the all-inclusive. Tip - Starbucks is not included and some restaurant menu options like surf and turf are not included. Since we arrived at 230 pm, we did not start the all-inclusive until the next day and we did not pay for the last day since we had an early flight. They included breakfast on our last day, free of charge. Nice! The resort grounds are beautiful, clean and well maintained. Because we were in the villas and not the hotel, there is a golf cart system to take you back and forth. The villa was great. 1.5 bath so our son could have his own bathroom. Full kitchen with stove (no oven) and refrigerator stocked with water, beer and snacks. See my pics.
We decided to drive into Cabo and eat. We had Tony's tacos which was recommended by the hotel. Good, good tacos and guacamole with chips. We parked at the Plaza Puerto Paraiso (mall) across the street where it's only $2 for parking.
Food was good everywhere we ate. Breakfast, we ate at either buffets (Peninsula and Vino Del Mar). Vino is larger, and better selection/options. Some days they had King Crab legs or crab claws available.
All the restaurants were excellent. No reservations required and hardly any wait but we always ate early (~6 pm). Special appreciation to the waiter Jesus at the La Bodega Argentinian restaurant. He made our son feel extra special by giving him a sombrero for pictures, meeting the Chef and teaching him some Spanish. Top notch service! There are 10 restaurants if you include the poolside grill and plenty of bars everywhere. They have wait service at all the pools and the beach.
My son used the Fiesta Kids club twice and enjoyed it. They watched movies, played video games, did painting and took them swimming at the pool.
We did do a presentation breakfast one day (it took 3 hours) and we chose zip-lining (Canopy Azul) as our gift. It was our first time and it was fantastic! Transportation was included. I'll do a separate review on them later.
We also did the Oceanus snorkeling trip which included snorkeling, boat ride and lunch with open bar. At $26 (adult)/$13(child), regular $65, this was a phenomenal deal we received as HGVC owners. If I had not found the brochure at the Kids club, I would have never known about this excursion as it was not advertised in the excursion office. I will review them separately as well.
My husband golfed at the Cabo San Lucas Country Club and Palmilla which he booked at a reduced rate online via an app called tee-off. He made an impulse purchase and golfed at the hotel's world famous golf course, Cabo Del Sol Ocean course, as he felt it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for him. Again, our ownership did save us some money but still quite expensive.
Most days were spent at one of the many pools (7) at the resort. Owners have access to two private pools which made it extra nice.
Reasons for not giving this place 5 stars: 1 - their Wi-Fi sucks! You have to be in the main lobby to get any really good service. We also found a decent connection at the Blu restaurant. 2 - evening entertainment is lacking. Live singer at the fire pit most evenings was about all they offered. We didn't visit the lounge so can't comment on it.
All in all, great vacation and would definitely come back here in the future.
"Dinner on beach"
Simply Awesome and romantic. My birthday in a cabana on the beach. Roberto Montes and his crew were so attentive. Roberto is the manager over the peninsula cafe overlooking the beach. Surf & Turf was spectacular and flaming coffee presentation for desert was mesmerizing in twilight.
"Golf trip "
Great trip! The food at the hotel was excellent. View from the room couldn't have been better. I'd love to go back when it isn't so hot and play the course again!! No hidden surprise fees to pay at the end-
Stayed here with a bunch of business associates on a work trip. It was gorgeous! Some of the best pictures I've ever taken in my life were taken here. The resort offers simple rooms, HUGE bathrooms, beautiful views (of course), and delicious food. (Traveled in February 2016 but never finished my review.) Fun stuff to do each day, or just lie on the beach. Don't miss the sea urchins!
"Very good customer service"
First experience at an all-inclusive and first time to Cabo. Have traveled all over Baja for decades, usually low brow - camping, surfing, and the like. Read revews of Grand Fiesta and stayed with my wife for a week. The staff is very congenial and the best I have ever encountered anywhere. The seemed genuinely happy and personally interested in making your stay a good one. I am not saying that to be nice. They just seemed happy to work there. Better than any american placed I have stayed by a margin. American hospitality can seem a bit canned or forced no matter how genuine the staff. One of our stars was Josafat Hernandez who took care of us at the beach. Above and beyond service.
Other reviews commented about the walk from the more remote units. I actually liked this as it was quieter and the "extra" walk to the main hotel added about 1-2 minutes. The only negatives were the rooms needed a little rehab - door knob came off and drawer pull came off, but all was clean and otherwise worked. Given my past travels in Baja, as I noted above, l am used to only half the items working in rooms. One other thing to be aware of is that there is no swimable beach. It's rocky, but high tide makes a medium sized tide pool waste deep to see fish, of which there are alot. Lastly, the time share sales teams that are at every hotel are a little bit annoying. Talked to a few couples that owned time shares there for years, and all were happy and had positive things to say.
